Transmission by Daniel Popper

2015 Sunfair Rd, Joshua Tree, CA 92252 · Mojave Moon Ranch

Transmission sculpture by Daniel Popper at Mojave Moon Ranch

Rising 26 feet from the Mojave Desert floor, "Transmission" is a monumental sculpture by South African artist Daniel Popper, installed at the Mojave Moon Ranch near Joshua Tree. The white concrete figure — a serene female face flanked by two massive outstretched hands — is adorned with intricate mosaic tile work and crescent moon cutouts that catch the desert light.

The sculpture symbolizes the connection between earth and sky, and the mosaic details inside the face and palms create a kaleidoscope effect in the morning sun. It's free to visit and makes for incredible photos, especially in the early morning golden hour light. Plan for about 30 minutes here.

Beauty Bubble Salon and Museum storefront in Joshua Tree

One of the most delightfully eccentric stops in the Hi-Desert. Jeff Hafler's Beauty Bubble is a working hair salon, museum, and gift shop that has been collecting hair and beauty memorabilia since 1991. The collection includes over 3,000 pieces — vintage hair dryers, perm machines, curlers, lotion bottles, and salon chairs dating back to the early 1900s.

The pink and turquoise storefront with vintage salon chairs out front is an iconic Joshua Tree photo op. Even if you're not getting a haircut, the museum and gift shop are worth a quick stop. It's the kind of place that only exists in the California desert.

Stop 4 · Must-See

Cholla Cactus Garden

Pinto Basin Rd, Joshua Tree National Park · ~30 min drive from Black Rock

Cholla Cactus Garden at golden hour in Joshua Tree National Park

One of the most photographed spots in all of Joshua Tree. A short, flat boardwalk loop (about 0.25 miles) winds through a dense field of Teddy Bear Cholla cacti — thousands of them, stretching in every direction. When backlit by sunlight, the cholla spines glow like golden halos, creating an otherworldly landscape.

Important: Despite their cuddly name, Teddy Bear Cholla are notoriously painful. Their barbed spines detach easily and embed in skin and clothing. Stay on the boardwalk, wear closed-toe shoes, and don't touch anything. Bring a comb or pliers just in case — locals carry them for a reason.

Joshua Tree National Park · One of the best dark sky sites in the U.S.

Milky Way over Joshua Tree National Park

Joshua Tree National Park was designated an International Dark Sky Park by the International Dark-Sky Association, making it one of the premier stargazing destinations in the United States. On a clear, moonless night, you can see the Milky Way stretching from horizon to horizon, thousands of individual stars, and even the Andromeda Galaxy with the naked eye.

The best stargazing spots include the Cholla Cactus Garden parking area (which you visited earlier), Keys View (5,185 ft elevation for unobstructed views), and the Black Rock Canyon Campground area. Bring a blanket, a red-light flashlight (to preserve night vision), and dress warmly — desert temperatures can drop 30–40°F after sunset.
